Understand the business of art
The Master of Arts program in Art Market Studies provides students with the knowledge
and skills to successfully navigate the global art world. Graduates apply their passion
for art and business acumen to a variety of dynamic roles—in commercial art galleries, auction houses, art fairs, museums, foundations, online
platforms, and art appraisal firms. The program takes full advantage of its location in
New York City—and, more specifically, in Chelsea, the hub of the New York art world—to
immerse students in this exciting, evolving field. Frequent guest speakers and site
visits offer vivid insights and privileged access.
The first two semesters of the program feature intensive training in a range of subjects, from art law to valuation to the history of contemporary art. The curriculum integrates interdisciplinary studies with practical experience. For instance, in AM 654 Practicum: Exhibition, students organize, curate, and promote their own gallery exhibition, handling every aspect of the process—selecting the artists, managing the budget, installing the show, and designing all marketing materials.
The three-semester program culminates in a flexible and customizable final semester. Students may choose to complete an academic thesis or pursue additional business-oriented coursework. Students also hone their skills and advance their careers through a required internship.
